We are delighted to offer this exceptionally presented De Tomaso Mangusta, recently restored by Furlonger and awarded for best in class as well as the Churchill Trophy at Salon Prive 2021.
Furlonger sourced this Mangusta in 2020 for a long-standing client with the sole purpose of restoring the car to the highest possible standard, but with the aim to retain as much as much originality as possible. Many hundreds of hours were spent researching and restoring every item to the original specification. The car was extremely original, being just one owner from new, making it the ultimate candidate to restore.
The Mangusta in question, chassis #8MA1044, is one 401 total production cars and 1 of the 55 final examples constructed outside of Modena. In early 1971, production of the Mangusta began to wind down as it was beginning to get in the way of the upcoming Pantera assembly line. Mr Armin Fischer, who ran a company named Ital Import based in Stuttgart, contacted Mr De Tomaso regarding selling the Pantera as a Concessionaire within Germany. Fischer had approached De Tomaso several times in the past with the idea of opening an official concessionaire in Germany. After some thinking, De Tomaso invited Mr Fischer to Modena and showed him a warehouse holding 55 Mangustas in different stages of assembly. De Tomaso then told him ‘’The day you have sold all 55 cars, you will get a one-year exclusive concession for Germany’’. With some financial help, Fischer secured the Mangustas in lots of 8-10 and imported them to a workshop in Landau run by a Mr Gustav Hoecker. In just 3 months, the remaining 55 Mangustas were not only completely assembled but also sold, which awarded Fischer the rights to sell all De Tomaso products exclusively for the German market.
The last 55 Mangustas received some subtle changes over the original factory-built cars, these included a differently positioned handbrake with a Mercedes 230 SL handle, a fuse box cover with German instructions on the underside, heated rear windows, a column mounted ignition barrel instead of being dash mounted and powder coated grills rather than painted.
Mangusta chassis #8MA1044 was acquired in May of 2020 from its first and only owner who resided in Emmendingen, Germany, and transported to Furlonger just a few weeks later. #8MA1044 was originally purchased by a Mr Hermann Dietrich-Troeltsch, one of the founding members of the Motor Press Publishing House, now publisher of numerous German magazines including Motor Klassik. Mr Dietrich Troeltsch, a true motoring enthusiast, cherished the Mangusta for 48 years.
The car was purchased as it retained such an exceptional level of originality and was presented in a completely drivable and useable condition. The second motive behind the acquisition was to carry out a comprehensive, ground up restoration with the objective of keeping everything to a factory, period correct specification. When inspected, every aspect of the car was correct, and all the numbers confirmed matching from the body, trim, engine and gearbox etc. The only item that was not original was the exhaust system, which had typically been swapped from a factory Ansa to a sports unit. The Mangusta had no other modifications nor changes, making it the perfect candidate for a restoration.
An extensive amount of research was conducted prior to the restoration process in order to preserve as much originality as possible and ensure total authenticity once the car was complete. This included speaking with a historic Maserati specialist as Ghia cars/De Tomaso’s were painted in Maserati colours, #8MA1044 being finished in Rosso Fuoco or ‘Fire Red’. Our chosen trimmer spent a great deal of time researching into the correct vinyl, interior carpet and front boot carpet as well as the correct sound insulation and heat proofing/matting wadding, all of which have been carefully sourced to conduct a complete retrim.
The body was fully stripped to bare metal and soda blasted. Any new metal needed was replaced and over 1000 hours alone went into the amazing works, with particular attention to alignment and gaps.
The cars major components have not been replaced but restored or refurbished with exceptional attention to detail, including:
Thousands of meticulous hours have been put into the revival of this Mangusta, with no compromise to quality or originality in all aspects of the car. The overall attention to detail has been obsessional, with a conscientious effort to retain originality but total perfection in all regards.
