The most successful racing F40 in the UK. One of 30 F40 Competizione race cars converted in period by F40 specialists worldwide. Documented in the 2001 Cavallino magazine article on LM, GT and GTE cars. One of the most successful cars of those 30 with British and International race history. Now in completely original factory concours condition. This is a unique opportunity to acquire a part of Ferrari’s racing history and enjoy a fantastic example with documented history from new.
Delivered new to Italian racing driver, Vito Coco in Catania on 22 January 1990. Retained in his personal museum with minimal mileage before being imported into the UK by Maranello Concessionaires in January 1998.
At this time, multiple Ferrari championship winning race driver and Internationally acclaimed proprietor of Italia Autosport, John Pogson acquired #83916 on behalf of a client. In 1999, 2000 and 2001 this F40 became the most successful racing F40 in the UK by winning the Maranello Championship, the Intermarque Championship and the Ferrari Porsche Challenge. The driver throughout was John Pogson himself, with the Italia Autosport race team supporting.
The race history is fully documented and prospective investors and collectors are encouraged to review the history files.
Unlike the other 29 F40 Competizione cars, which have been modified beyond a point where they can be taken back to original factory condition, a substantial part of #83916, including front bonnet, rear lid, wheels, suspension components, seats and steering wheel were removed and dry stored whilst the car was in Competizione form. Additionally helicopter tape was used to protect all exposed carbon kevlar surfaces.
Modified parts sourced directly from Ferrari were used for racing with development of those parts being achieved from the close relationship between Italia Autosport and Ferrari. John Pogson took guidance and input directly from Michelotto and the Ferrari test driver, Dario Benuzzi in developing #83916 into Competizione form. The car raced in a series where the engine was not permitted to be modified and subsequently was not under any major stress. In 2011 (see below) the engine and gearbox were fully rebuilt meaning it has covered very little kilometres since then.
#83916 had a 57% ‘race entered to victory’ ratio having won 28 times from 49 races in its three seasons racing. It won 8 pole positions with 32 fastest laps. It finished in 87.76% of its races. No damage to the car whatsoever was incurred during these achievements, which cannot be said of many other F40 Competizione cars or indeed road cars.
At the end of the 2001 racing season #83916 was loaned to the Beaulieu motor museum for 3 years where it was the star car of the museum (displayed in the entrance lobby).
In 2011, Italia Autosport, under the guidance and scrutiny of John Pogson, recommissioned the car back to original factory specification using the original parts. Following this it entered the Ferrari Owners Club 2011 national concourse at Heythrop winning its class.
Furlonger sold the car to the current collector (the third owner since new) in 2013 and it has continued to be maintained by Italia Autosport since. Most recently a service, cam belt change and detailing was carried out in July 2017. The level of documented service history, primarily all with Italia Autosport, is second to none and confirms the low mileage of 12,000. All original books and tools are retained with the car.
The tanks were replaced in 2011 as part of the recommissioning.
In 2014, #83916 starred in the XCAR film “Analogue Animal” (see link) which immortalises the magic of racing F40s in period. #83916 has appeared on TV and in magazines and has been driven by Jody Schekter and Jack Sears adding to the fame of this very special car.
A perfect example of a non cat non adjust F40, this car is unique. Not only does it tick all the boxes for any collector as a concours condition original road car with low mileage but, more importantly, a race history such as this comes along once in a lifetime and this is certainly one of the most iconic and collectable F40s available.
This car is stored local to us, please make an appointment before coming to view.
