The original GTO, the 250GTO was developed for the FIA GT Championship, duly taking the manufacturer’s title for Ferrari in 1962, 1963 and 1964; clearly, any revival of the ‘GTO’ name would have to be a very special car. Enter the 288GTO. Like its predecessor, the 288GTO (the initials stand forGran Turismo Omologato) was conceived as a limited edition model, just 200 units being planned to meet the then-existing Group B homologation requirements for international sports car racing.
Powered by a 32-valve V8 2,855cc fitted with twin IHI turbos and Behr inter-coolers, performance was nearly as staggering as the list price of £73,499 with 400bhp at 7,000 rpm and a mighty 366lb/ft of torque at just 3,800 revs. Top speed was 189mph.
In total 272 cars were built, every one sold prior to the start of production in July 1984.
Chassis number ‘53791’ was delivered new to Switzerland to its first and only private owner in 1985. Finished in Rosso Corsa with Nero Daytona style seats with Rosso inserts the owner chose not to specify the car with air conditioning or electric windows, probably because of his connection with the WRC!
This car is a perfect balance of condition and originality and is in truly exceptional condition. It is complete with all of its original books, its document folder, tool roll, space saver spare wheel etc. A unique opportunity to purchase such a low kms car with only two owners.
