Furlonger are pleased to announce our latest addition, the Jaguar XJR-16.
Jaguar had already experienced some success with the XJR9 and 10 in the US IMSA series in 1989 and 1990 so at the start of the 1991 series they re entered with two cars #191 and #291 intending to pip Toyota Eagle and Nissan to the title.
Overall the XJR-16 relied on its predecessors when it came to the mechanics, however there were several fundamental modifications within its design, the cars rear half being the most noticeable. The suspension was revised entirely and featured push-rod actuated dampers and springs which were attached to the top of the gearbox where as all previous TWR Jaguars had springs fixed beside the uprights. The cars newly developed two tier rear wing provided an immense level of downforce and stability. Still at the heart of the car was the 3000cc twin turbo V6 producing close to 800bhp.
#191 the car we have for sale today was the more successful of the two XJR 16’s with four victories in 1991, finishing 3rd in the IMSA championship and third at Daytona 24hr in 1992.
Driven by Davy Jones for the 1991 series, it only entered Daytona 24hr in 1992 and was then driven by Jones, David Brabham (son of Sir Jack Brabham), Goodyear and Pruett.
#191 was and important car for Jaguar with Jones going on to race at Le Mans in the XJR12 with Boesel the other works driver of #291 also taking a seat finishing 2nd.
Today this XJR 16 is eligible for many interesting events including the Peter Auto Group C series which includes races such as Spa, Paul Ricard and Silverstone Classic. It also can enter the 2018 Le Mans Classic and ran at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2017 which are both converted events in the Motorsport calendar.
A very competitive car, during the its current ownership has undergone extensive development. Areas updated include vehicle wiring systems and ECU’s, braking systems, chassis dynamics by GSD and engine development by Advanced Engine Research. Currently the car has up to date certificates (fuel tank, crack testing ect) to allow entry to future events. The engine and gearbox have covered 200 miles since rebuild.
The car was proved to be successful in current form winning at Monza, Spa and in Portugal. It achieved class champion in 2015.
Jaguar XJR 16 #191 is a superb example of Jaguars reassurance into World Sportscar Championship (WSC) Group C and the IMSA Camel GTP in the late 80’s/early 90’s and has a continuous history with all of the required documentation for it to be campaigned in historic Motorsport events around the world.
