The Ferrari Dino saw the birth of the rear-mid engine sports car from the historic brand and remains one of the most iconic and beautiful cars ever to leave the famous Maranello gates. By the late 60s, increasing sales and reduced costs were imperative for Ferrari and following development of small capacity engines for Formula 2 racing, the decision was made to create a ‘sub brand’ to launch a more affordable ‘Ferrari’ to the market. With assistance from Fiat to produce the engines, the Dino 206 GT was revealed to the world in 1967 in production form; a fitting tribute to Enzo’s late son Alfredino. The Dino was initially launched as the 206 GT, before later being offered with a larger displacement in the 246, both in GT and GTS guise.
We are thrilled to be able to bring 246 GT ‘E-Series’ chassis 4540 to the market for the first time since 1972 with remarkable single family-owned since then. This Dino was supplied new via Maranello Concessionaires in 1972 and specified in the distinguished colour combination of Verdo Medio Metallizzato over Beige interior with matching carpets. Further options specified were Cromodora wheels (including full-sized spare), jack, tool roll, wheel chock and power-operated windows. This example is one of just 488 Dino 246 GTs produced by Ferrari SpA for the UK market in right-hand drive and one of just 45 to leave the factory in Verde Medio Metallic.
Just months after its initial delivery to a Mr. Olsen of Chelsea, the car was then sold to its second custodian Mr Harris, via Hexagon Classics in London and it has remained with this family ever since. Unlike the majority of Dinos that come to market, this highly original example is also complete with extensive period documentation that includes the original invoice, many bills and receipts over the years, period photographs and the original order files with correspondences between the factory and Maranello Sales.
In addition to such low ownership and original condition, this E-Series 246 GT also boast exceptionally low mileage having covered just over 25,000 miles in its half century of existence. The Harris family have always maintained for the Dino when required and it has recently enjoyed an extensive recommissioning in preparation for its new keeper. Further, after its initial check-over prior to the show, the car will enjoy a full inspection and service in the Furlonger workshop prior to handover.
246 GT #4540 represents an extremely rare opportunity to purchase a highly original and low mileage Dino, but also one that can be used and enjoyed for decades to come. A car that boasts matching numbers and colours, this UK-supplied example is one that should not be missed.
