Succeeding the immensely popular 308 GTB/GTS series in 1985, the 328 guise still retained the mechanical qualities of its predecessor but featured numerous updates. These included modifications such as a redesigned body, chassis and the engine with an increased displacement to 3.2 Litre (3185 cc), providing more power and torque output. Derived from the successful Dino engine that was first produced in the 1950’s, it is essentially the same design of the powerplant used in the 308 QV (Quattrovalvole) model. A naturally aspirated 3.2 Litre, 4 valve per cylinder, transverse mounted, rear mid-engine V8 layout. The engine retained the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system found in the 308, albeit fitted with a Marelli MED 806 A electronic ignition system. As a result, the engine produced a punchy 270 horsepower and 231 lb ft of torque, capable of reaching 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds with a top speed of 166 mph! Mated to the engine was the mounted in-unit 5 speed manual transmission gearbox assembly, with a traditional Ferrari gated design.
