The Ferrari 488 Pista is the latest and greatest amid the glorious lightweight line-up, stepping up from the 488 GTB to a more ‘race car’ orientated set-up.
The name ‘Pista’ (meaning ‘Track’) alone conveys the true nature of what this car is all about, but the overall performance punch it carries is truly astonishing. First and most important is the car’s power-plant, of course donated from the 488 GTB but featuring 50% new parts effectively shared from its Challenge track-focused sibling. These include new valve gear and cams, all new intake system, reinforced cylinder heads and pistons, lighter titanium conrods, a raised compression ratio and revised turbochargers. Despite the 488 GTB’s reputation of delivering literally no lag whatsoever, the Pista resets expectations yet again. The car produces a staggering 711 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and can achieve 0-60 mph in an eye-watering 2.7 seconds!
Although its internal engine changes to improve performance are radical, there is also a host of newly revised assistance systems/updated software in place that operate simultaneously to deliver a seriously capable handling package. Version 6.0 of Ferrari’s impeccable SSC, FDE (Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer) gives the driver easier control in lengthier oversteer scenarios and a monstrously quick gear change is now achieved both up and down the F1 DCT gearbox (as if it could get better).
The Pista’s bodywork was guided to meet aerodynamic demands, yet it still maintains the all-important signature styling elements which have been meticulously penned to create one of the most elegantly designed ultra-modern supercars. The Pista features some functional yet beautiful aerodynamic features such as the S-Duct at the front, which visually shortens the car’s nose and gives a unique floating wing effect. The concept found within the front is also apparent on the car’s rear with built in ‘dolphin-tail’ rear diffuser, providing an impression of lightness, efficiency and adding a sense of power to the tail. The rear diffuser which protrudes from the rear has been developed via inspiration from the one found on the 488 GTE.
Expectations for the Speciale’s successor were extremely high, being the very first turbo-charged V8 in the lightweight special series, but Ferrari have succeeded: a road car with the presence, performance and handling solidity of a race car that is surprisingly usable on public roads. The ‘punchy’ Pista is a formidable opponent to almost any supercar on the road, proudly sitting amongst the ranks of the 700 + horsepower bracket, there are few and far between that can go toe to toe with this ‘Mr Hyde’ of the 488 guise.
Wearing the superb combination of Rosso Corsa over Charcoal Alcantara interior, this remarkable example has covered a mere 375 miles from new and features an excellent specification!
